New legal recruitment venture targets NHW and asset recovery markets

ThoughtLeaders4 (TL4) and ABC Chambers Solutions (ABC) have launched a legal recruitment joint venture, ABC Legal Talent.

The move brings together a leading legal content and events company and specialist recruiters to the Bar staffed by highly experienced ex-clerks, with decades of experience in chambers recruitment.

The joint venture aims to provide specialist legal talent consultancy, supplying talent acquisition and recruitment to niche, boutique, and high-value law firms, with a particular focus on high-net-worth and asset recovery practices.

It will offer light-touch guidance on succession planning, future skills, advice on growth priorities, and retention risks, as part of a bespoke service that uses the career management and counselling skills former clerks possess, alongside targeted recruitment activity, and TL4’s network.

The partnership follows demand from law firms and accountancy members, and a mutual meeting of minds between the founders of both businesses at TF4’s events. Partners who spoke to this title said they were increasingly dissatisfied with larger, more conventional recruiters and that the new offering would complement existing HR functions.

Both ABC and TL4 said the new venture would offer “an integrity-led, people-centred approach to recruitment” whose ethos would complement TL4’s commitment to creating “meaningful professional connections”, harnessing TL4’s sector visibility and networks with ABC Chambers Solutions’ expertise in people strategy, market positioning, and workforce planning.

ABC, founded in 2012, is led by managing director Bill Connor, who runs the business alongside four recently appointed directors: Sam Biggerstaff, Hudson Brewer, Georgina Sundown, and co-founder Tess Conner.

Each of the directors has strong clerking and business development backgrounds; Conner with the late George Carman QC, and what is now the 36 Group, while Biggerstaff spent 18 years at Essex Court Chambers, and Brewer at Coram Chambers.

TL4 was founded in 2019 by Paul Barfoot, as managing director, a former divisional manager at Informa plc, together with former Marcus Evans, Legal 500, and Informa senior manager Chris Leese, as chief commercial officer, and Danushka De Alwis, as chief operating officer, another senior Informa alumna, who, between them, have over 40 years of experience working with the legal sector

De Alwis, writing on the TL4 website, said: “Our communities are carefully curated ecosystems of experts who not only exchange practical knowledge but also actively shape the future of their industries.”

The company focuses on legal events and content, with a particular focus on distinct practice-area communities, such as ThoughtLeaders4 HNW Divorce (specialising in family law), ThoughtLeaders4 Private Client, and ThoughtLeaders4 FIRE – Fraud. Insolvency. (Asset) Recovery. Enforcement, as well as more recently, ThoughtLeaders4 Competition and TL4 Middle East.

Leese, Barfoot, and De Alwis praised the recruiter’s specialist knowledge, saying “Launching ABC Legal Talent together formalises a partnership built on trust, expertise, and a shared commitment to supporting specialist practitioners with integrity and depth.”

Conner and his colleagues added: “Our collaboration with TL4 reflects a strong alignment of values. TL4’s communities are highly respected for their thought leadership and quality of engagement, making them the ideal partner for a recruitment offering that prioritises honesty, insight, and true sector understanding”.

They added: “ABC Legal Talent will provide firms with recruitment solutions genuinely tailored to specialist practice needs.”
